BAINBRIDGE, George Cole. The Fly-Fisher's Guide illustrated by coloured plates representing upwards of forty of the most useful flies, accurately copied from nature, Liverpool: printed for the author by G. F. Harris's widow and brothers, 1816. 4, 8 hand-coloured engraved plates, large wood-engraved historiated opening initial, wood-engraved tail-piece (tiny ink stain to outer margin of title, first plate slightly spotted, plate 4 with small segment torn from outer margin, some marginal soiling), black half morocco by Gruel, gilt panelled spine, t.e.g., others uncut. Provenance: Charles Streater (contemporary ownership signature on title).
FIRST EDITION, ONE OF 12 LARGE PAPER COPIES. This is an important work, regarded as the source book for Ronalds' Fly-fisher's Entomology 1836 (see lot 172). It follows George Scotcher's exceptionally rare Fly-fisher's Legacy (Chepstow, 1800) as only the second angling book with hand-coloured engravings of natural flies: these comprise "excellent" coloured engravings of forty natural flies suitable for trout-fishing and, in addition, the first coloured figures of salmon flies. The first plate figures a fine trout. W. & S. p. 21: "Twelve copies of the first edition were in 4to., coloured with greater care, and published at two guineas"; Petit 139.
