[BARKER, Thomas of Bracemeale, Salop.] The Country-Mans Recreation; or The art of planting, graffting and gardening in three books ... Hereunto is likewise added the art of angling, London: by T. Mabb for William Shears, 1654. Small 4, 11 double-page engraved plates, numerous woodcut illustrations (some browning and staining), later calf (rubbed).

Barker contributed the 18-page Art of Angling to this compilation: his work is dated 1653 on the sectional title and occupies 18 pages. According to Westwood, the printing is identical with the 1651 first edition of his angling book, though the author's name is suppressed. Barker was a cook, employed during the Protectorate to cater for foreign ambassadors who came to London, and he begs the reader's pardon for not writing "Scholler like". But he produced what Hills describes as "a wholly excellent book, copied by Walton for fly fishing and fly dressing, the first which advises fishing fine for trout, and the first which mentions the reel": Hills History of Fly Fishing p. 60; Wing B784; W. & S. p. 67.
