Lot Essay

Printed medallions and borders of chintz were produced in the early 19th century and often used for quilt making. Some of these were commemorative, including those for the popular Princess Charlotte who died in childbirth in 1817. See "Quilts of the British Isles", Janet Rae, 1987, London, pps. 83 and 86 for a similar coverlet which uses the same commemorative panel.
