In common with Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, R.A. (1836-1912) and J.W. Godward (1861-1922) whose work his oeuvre sometimes resembles, Henry Ryland established his reputation as a painter of classical genre. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the New Watercolour Society, the Grosvenor Gallery, the New Gallery and elsewhere.
