This watercolour is an unrecorded work by the artist. Previously he is noted as flourishing from 1878-1889 but the discovery of this dated watercolour expands his oeuvre by 12 years. Simmons lived in Holmbury St. Mary in Dorking, in Henley-on-Thames and in London. He exhibited works including The Merry May-Time and A Rustic Flirtation at the Royal Academy between 1880 and 1889 and was known for his portraits, landscapes and genre subjects.
