Lot Essay

Charles, 3rd Duke of Richmond and Lennox was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary to the Court of France and in 1766 was constituted Principal Secretary of State and in 1782 appointed Master General of the Ordnance. He married Mary (d. 1796), daughter and co-heir of 4th Earl of Elgin and 3rd Earl of Ailesbury in 1757 and was succeeded by his nephew, Charles.
