The arms are those of Pedro Alvarez de Abreu e Sousa, captain-major in India, and grandson of Joo da Silva e Sousa, Governor of Angola and Rio de Janeiro. See N. de Castro, Chinese Porcelain and the Heraldry of the Empire, 1988, p.145, where a slightly later date for this service is suggested.
