Lot Essay

The arms are those of Jos Mascarenhas Pacheco Pereira Coelho de Melo (1720 - 1788). He was exiled from Portugal to Brazil for his part in the judgement of those involved in the people's revolt against the Companhia de Vinhos do Alto Douro, and was imprisonned on the Ilha das Cobras in Rio de Janeiro. He was pardonned by Queen Maria I of Portugal in 1777, to where he returned and remained until his death.

A similar plate is illustrated by N. de Castro, Chinese Porcelain and the Heraldry of the Empire, 1988, p.111; and another, from the Jorge Getulio Veiga Collection, was sold Sotheby's London, 31 October 1989, lot 156.
