Lot Essay

Early brandy bowls were made of porcelain mounted with flat silver side handles. During the early 17th Century these bowls were gradually replaced by octagonal silver examples. In the second half of the 17th Century the shape of the brandy bowl changed from octagonal and circular into oval. It was in this period that silversmiths borrowed motifs for decoration of the side handles from ornament prints by Muntinck. Outside the Northern Netherlands brandy bowls were made in Germany and Scandinavian countries.
