Lot Essay

This large vase shows all the characteristics of Namikawa Yasuyuki's (1845-1927) later, more pictorial, style. The earlier elaborate borders have been almost completely abandoned, leaving only a tiny strip of half-cash ornament around the base, and the decoration is concentrated on one side of the vase so that the back has a broad area of unsupported enamel, an extremely difficult technical feat.
