AN UNUSUAL SMALL CARVED YAOZHOU DISH
NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY

The interior wall of the shallow dish divided into six petal lobes by ribs rising to the everted and correspondingly lobed rim from a central medallion of a lotus plant and water weeds floating amidst the darker pooling of the olive-green glaze which continues onto the exterior to stop in a line around the flat base and countersunk center burnt reddish-brown in the firing--4½in. (11.5cm.) diam.

No other dish of this type appears to have been published. The closest is a barbed yaozhou dish of the same small size carved with a lotus spray, included in the exhibition, Chinese Antiquities from the Brian S. McElney Collection, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 1987, Catalogue, no. 48
