A PAINTED AND SANCAI-GLAZED POTTERY FIGURE OF AN EQUESTRIAN
TANG DYNASTY

The rider in an alert posture with both arms bent as if to grasp reins, dressed in a wide-lapelled, belted green tunic, astride the horse standing foursquare on a thin rectangular base, its arched neck with cropped mane, head slightly turned to its left and straw-glazed body splashed at regular intervals with dribbling green and amber on the blaze and hoofs, the rider's head with traces of pink, red and black depicting a stern facial expression below the black, beaked cap, black lines limning the horse's fittings, some restoration--14½in. (36.8cm.) high
