A LARGE SANCAI-GLAZED POTTERY FIGURE OF A LOKAPALA
TANG DYNASTY

Depicted standing in a triumphant posture on a recumbent bullock supported on a rock-form base, his left hand akimbo on his thrust-out left hip, his right hand raised with fist clenched as if to grasp a weapon, his unglazed face turned to his right with fierce expression and curled moustache below the combed, wavy hair drawn up in a topknot, wearing full, scaled armour splash-glazed in dark green, cream and amber, with elaborate dragon's-head epaulettes and cord-bound breastplate above a molded dragon's-head boss and foliate applique at the lower waist, all over an amber-glazed, flaring underskirt, restoration--41½in. (105.4cm.) high
