Lot Essay

There is no record of George Price as either a military or naval surgeon and it is therefore presumed that he was a civilian practioner. This highly unusual composition, including as it does the host of sampans lying before the burgeoning city of Hong Kong, is markedly similar to the view of the floating home of the boatbuilder Thomas Hunt at Whampoa which is in the collection of the Peabody Museum at Salem, Massachusetts and illustrated in their 1968 catalogue (see p. 91, no. 408); that work is also by an unindentified Chinese artist.
