Eichler, with the final leaf of directions to the binder in vol.IV. (Slight worming in the lower margins of quires D-H in vol.II occasionally just touches text.) Contemporary calf, gilt spine (rubbed).
FIRST EDITION of this important historical source for Jewish life in Germany in the mid-eighteenth century. Bodenschatz, the eminent German protestant theologian, was born in Hof, Bavaria, and received his early education in Gera where, through his teacher Schleusner, he became interested in biblical and oriental subjects, later studying oriental languages at the University of Jena. In his writings he describes contemporary Jewish customs faithfully and without prejudice. A second edition, under a new title, was published in Frankfurt in 1756. Graesse I, 459 'Ouvrage curieux'.
