Lot Essay

Hardwick's Parish Church and Park Crescent can be seen in the background of this picture. Park Crescent was completed six years before in 1812 by a speculative builder, Charles Mayor, who went bankrupt.

Ferneley was one of the most gifted painters of sporting subjects of his generation. Encouraged by the Duke of Rutland and other local patrons, who recognised his artistic talent, he was sent, aged 21, from Melton Mowbray to London, to study under Ben Marshall and was enrolled by him into the Royal Academy Schools. His patrons included many of the famous sportsmen of the day and members of the most prominent aristocratic families.
