Lot Essay

The view depicted is looking east along the Strand with John Nash's 'pepper-pots' building on the left (now Coutts's Bank) which was completed by the builder William Herbert in 1831. The extreme right shows the corner leading into Market Street which led to Hungerford Market. The Market was demolished in 1860 to make way for Charing Cross Station. The red gig in the foreground, built to seat only one person, was called a sulkie.
