Lot Essay

Burlington House was originally begun circa 1664 by Sir John Denham for himself, however it was sold unfinished to the first Earl of Burlington, who had it remodelled by Hugh May in 1668. It was remodelled again for the third Earl between 1717 and 1720 and became the model house for the Palladians. In 1867 Burlington House was made the home of the Royal Academy and between 1868-73 a large palatial range in the Italian style was added, with a high centre above a tripartite archway with seven bays on either side, it leads onto the courtyard with West and East ranges built in the same character.

Lauder was the son of a portrait painter who studied in Glasgow. His studio was based in London and he painted a number of views of London and of Venice.
