Wing Commander Richard Thomas Rich started out as a Private in the Devonshire Regiment in India but gained a Commission in the Royal Air Force as an Observer in 1918 and fought on the Salonika Front with No. 17 Squadron. Next actively engaged in the Waziristan operations of 1919, when he flew operationally as an Observer Officer in D.H. 9s of No. 60 (Bomber) Squadron, he was advanced to Squadron Leader in December 1936. Rich served in the U.K. and in the Middle East during the 1939-45 War, retiring as a Wing Commander in 1948.
