Flight Lieutenant Norman Vernon Gill, D.F.C., was born in April 1920 and joined the R.A.F.V.R. in August 1940, gaining appointment as a Sergeant Pilot in August 1941. Subsequently commissioned, he qualified on Wellingtons at No. 23 O.T.U., prior to joining No. 103 Squadron and first flying operationally on 9.11.1941, when detailed to attack Hamburg. Gill went on to complete a full tour of duty, his targets including Bremen, Brest, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Essen, Lubeck, Mannheim, Munster, Rostock, St. Nazaire and Warnemunde. 'Rested' at No. 26 O.T.U. between June 1942 and June 1944, he returned to active service with No. 622 Squadron as a Lancaster Pilot and completed another dozen or so operations before being transferred out for further instructional duties in late November. A well-merited D.F.C. was gazetted in the same month.
