GARFIELD, James A. (1831-1881). Partly printed check signed ("J.A. Garfield") AS PRESIDENT, Washington, D.C. 16 June 1881.
71 x 197mm. (3.13/16 x 7 in.), neatly inlaid, clean, virtually invisible slit cancellations, otherwise in very fine condition. Typographical borders and a vignette image of Riggs Bank, with a horse-drawn carriage outside the imposing entrance. An order on the bank of Riggs and Company payable to Tyssowski Bros. for $15.50.
A VERY RARE PRESIDENTIAL CHECK. Some fourteen checks of Garfield have been sold at auction since 1976; of these, none was dated during Garfield's brief term as President (from 4 March to 19 September 1881). We are aware of only a single other example of a Garfield Presidential check.
