HOMER, Winslow, American artist. Autograph letter signed ("Winslow Homer") to Alfred Howland in New York; Belmont, Mass., 25 October no year. 2 pages, 12mo, integral blank, with original stamped and postmarked envelope addressed by Homer, envelope torn.
HOMER OFFERS SHARES IN HIMSELF. A curious financial proposition from the artist: "I beg to submit a project to your consideration which I am convinced will Pay. I propose making a stock Co. of myself. The shares to be $10. It is suggested that this corporation be moved from Belmont to New York as it is desirous that the surplus funds that have accumulated be put on the market. I hope 3000 should have confidence enough in this, to invest to the extent of one share $10 which we will return to you at sight..." .
Autograph letters of Homer are relatively rare. The Ruddy collection (sale, Smythe, 12 April 1999), included a 1907 letter (sale Smythe, 12 April 1999, lot 97, $4000); but the present letter appears to be considerably earlier in date.
