"IT IS DOUBTFUL WHETHER MY EXISTENCE IN GERMANY WILL LAST VERY LONG [My] publisher [Fischer] will most likely be expropriated in the not so distant future, and my last remaining activity there, with the Neue Rundschau will end." (N.p., n.d.) Martha Wegmann commissioned a few of the manuscript booklets with watercolors produced by Hesse ("the Piktor... isn't printed and exists in the meantime only in manuscript, with colored pictures, but it is very expensive"; see lots 206 and 207). It took Hesse usually two to three weeks to execute each of these booklets and although he advertised them broadly, they attracted little interest. ("I am pleased that you would like a handwritten poem. I included a small advertisement in the entire edition of Trost der Nacht, in several thousand copies, but this time, didn't get any commissions except yours." Zurich, 27. Dec. 1929). In this 30-year correspondence Hesse refers to various of his works, and is thankful for the understanding and encouraging comments he receives from Ms. Wegmann. -- [The pamphlets include]: Zehn Gedichte. [Bern, circa 1940]. 8o. Original printed wrappers. PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed and with original watercolor at end. -- Gedichte des Malers. Bern, 1920. 4o. Numerous colored plates. Original boards.
