IRON-RED QIANLONG SEAL MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

Finely enamelled around the compressed globular body in a continuous landscape scene comprising two groups of elegant Daoist fairies bearing tributes, garbed in loose robes and floating scarves, standing amidst cloud-scrolls above crested waves between rocky mountains and gnarled pine trees, all between formal borders including diaper, shou medallions and lotus lappet bands, flanked by borders with stylised flowers within cartouches and formal scrolls, the ring handles modelled as ferocious animal masks, details highlighted in gilt (enamel flakes retouched)
16 3/8 in. (41.7 cm.) high

Lot Essay

Previously sold in these Rooms, 2 April 1995, lot 674.

Inspiration for the border design around the tapering neck and the foot is evidently from textile design, particularly from silk brocade. Compare a similar theme enamelled in the famille verte palette on a bowl in the Percival David Foundation, dated early 18th century, illustrated by R. Scott, Imperial Taste, no. 47.

(US$64,000-90,000)
