A PAIR OF SEVRES BLEU CELESTE VASES AND COVERS (VASES 'A CULOT')
Circa 1770, both incised cD
Each with domed cover, rounded cylindrical neck, globular body and socle foot, the sides of the neck moulded with scrolls, the shoulder with foliate entwined ribs, the body with gilt shells radiating from the socle, the front painted with birds in a landscape, the reverse with a landscape, reserved within chased gilt bands on the turquoise ground gilt with a wreath

Lot Essay

What would appear to be the only other pair of this form extant is in the collection of the Huntington Library, San Marino, CA. With beau bleu grounds, they are dated 1774 and painted with enfants Boucher. See Tamara Praud and Marcel Brunet, Svres, Fribourg, 1978, no. 203.
