AN EARTHENWARE VASE
MEIJI PERIOD (LATE 19TH CENTURY), SIGNED IN GILT KINKOZAN ZO AND IMPRESSED KINKOZAN

The tapered quadrangular vase rising from the square foot with recessed base to the short, waisted neck ending in a rolled lip, decorated in colored enamels and gilt with attenuated, heart-shaped panels of figures at writing desks dreaming of Fudo or the wisteria maiden or with travellers caught in a thunderstorm caused by the thunder god, reserved on a cobalt blue ground patterned with gilded cherry florets, the flat shoulder patterned with gilded flowerheads and diaper patterns on the same cobalt ground- 9 7/8 in. (25.3 cm.) high
