Lot Essay

We are grateful to Professor Riccardo Lattuada for the attribution, and to Dr. Stefano Causa for confirming it on the basis of a photograph. Dr. Causa points out that the present work is a version, after a lost composition by Battistello Caracciolo, of the painting in a private collection, Madrid, which was formerly attributed to Caracciolo (see the catalogue of the exhibition, Caravaggio y el Naturalismo espanol, Seville, 1973, no. 17, fig. 17). A third, weaker version, which has traditionally been attributed to Spadarino, is at Barnard Castle, Yorkshire.
