The Reverend John Henderson was born in March 1852 and completed his education at Aberdeen University. Appointed to the Presbytery of Turiff in 1876 and to New Patrick later that year, he was ordained in 1878 and joined the Bombay Ecclesiastical Establishment as a Junior Chaplain in February 1882. In this latter capacity he accompanied the Indian Contingent to Egypt in the same year and was present at the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir. Returning to Bombay in the following year, he held a number of appointments in India over the next two decades, gaining advancement to Senior Chaplain in April 1892 and appointment as Honorary Chaplain to the Sind Rifles in August of the same year. Retiring to the U.K. in April 1905, he latterly served as a Chaplain to the Royal Navy. Henderson died in October 1925.
