Lot Essay

Commander Thomas Laurus Stephen Garrett was born in January 1869 and entered the Royal Naval Reserve as a Sub-Lieutenant in October 1898 - Commission Number 001175. Following initial Torpedo and Gunnery Courses, he was appointed to H.M.S. Nile for further training, his next appointment in H.M.S. Naiad taking him to African waters and a stint of active service off Somaliland. Advanced to Lieutenant in November 1903, awarded the R.D. in October 1913 and appointed Commander on his retirement in early 1914, Garrett was latterly Chief Assistant Harbour Master to the Tyne Improvement Commission. He died in May 1947.
