Lot Essay

Another example of this coffee pot model sold at Sotheby's New York, January 15, 1999, lot 66.

Tiffany & Co. began experimenting with enamelled silver in the 1880s. Edward C. Moore, head of Tiffany's design studio, perfected the technique of matte-finished enamel which decorates this coffeepot. While the form and motifs of the pot seem to be inspired by Islamic arabesques, Moore may have borrowed the idea of shaded enamels from Russian designs. Tiffany & Co. retailed Russian enamels during the late nineteenth century.
