Lot Essay

Self-made man, Samuel D. Babcock (1822-1902), began his career as a $400-a-year dry-goods clerk, later making his fortune with the New York banking firm he established, Babcock Brothers & Co. In 1878 Mr. Babcock retired to spend the remaining quarter-century of his life in philanthropic and advisory pursuits. His contemporaries praised Mr. Babcock for his ability, experience, and, above all, his great integrity. A Tribute of the Chamber of Commerce of the State of New York to the Memory of Samuel D. Babcock. October 2d, 1902 recorded: "Mr. Babcock, from first to last, has demonstrated the possibility of acquiring the position of a multi-millionaire, and have no one ever question the honesty of every single dollar of his accumulation."
