Lot Essay

The present painting derives from a drawing by Samacchini in the Albertina, Vienna (Inv. no. 2032), which in turn was the source for Agostino Carracci's print of 1580 (see D.D. Bohlin, Prints and related Drawings by the Carracci Family, 1979, pp. 86-7, no. 11, illustrated). There is a second version of the composition in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Nantes.
