Lot Essay

Though the present painting is by an, as yet, unidentified artist working in the workshop of Lorenzo di Credi, it is similar in type and composition to Lorenzo di Credi's Madonna del Latte in the National Gallery, London, of circa 1485-90. Other comparable paintings include two tondos given by Gigetta Dalli Regoli to the Master of the Conversazione di Santa Spirito, in the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin (G. Dalli Regoli, Lorenzo di Credi, 1966, pp. 190 and 191, nos. 229 and 239, figs. 263 and 270), and the Holy Family by the Master of the Naumburg Madonna (Christie's, New York, 14 January 1993, lot 105) which derives from Lorenzo di Credi's Holy Family in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. It seems plausible, on the basis of these comparisons to date the present work to circa 1490-1500.
