In the form of an Ionic Capital and fluted column, the hinged rectangular top enclosing a mirror and a later fitted interior, above folige scrolls and a hinged door enclosing a later shelf, on a square cut-corner base, extensive restorations, the plinth possibly replaced
33 in. (83.5 cm.) high; 21¾ in. (55 cm.) wide; 18½ in. (47 cm.) deep

Lot Essay

The night table, conceived in the manner of a Grecian Ionic capital, on hollow-cornered plinth, was intended in part to serve as a vase or basket stand as can be seen in Rudolph Ackerman's The Repository of Arts, London, in the 1820s. It relates to identical forms of German mahogany columns, sold in these Rooms, anonymously, 2 May 1997, lot 149, a further one was sold anoymously, 21 June, 1990 and a pair were sold by the late Geoffrey Bennison, 26 and 27 September, 1985, lot 93 and a further pair were sold anoymously, Christie's South Kensington, 30 November 1994, lot 503.
