Lot Essay
The present console is of almost identical form and dimensions as one stamped G.JACOB that was probably made in 1785 for the comte de Provence, brother of Louis XVI (sold from the Gutzwiller Collection, Sotheby's Monaco, 1 July 1995, lot 31). Differences in carved motifs on that model include a stop-fluted frieze and legs, while the present lot has a ribbon-tied laurel and berry frieze and ribbon-twist legs. The attribution to Jacob is made elusive by the fact that the present lot is lacking its stretcher, the underside of which is the place Jacob typically may have stamped this model, as on the Gutzwiller console.
