Three Tobacco Cases (Tonkotsu) and Pipecase
Edo Period (19th Century), the Second with Signature Kosho [O] Motte Toshi Kore [O] Zo (Made By Toshi Using Old Pine)
The first with the case constructed from abalone shells lined with a lacquered fabric, the fitted wood cover lacquered black on the underside, fitted with a blue glass ojime and a wood pipe holder carved as a long-legged foreigner standing and stretching, his tunic buttons inlaid with pink glass beads, the himotoshi formed by the space between his beard and chest, the cord held in place by a small shell, with a bamboo, silver, and soft-metal inlaid pipe incised with a scene of thatched roof cottages in a mountainous landscape; the second of carved wood and laquered to simulated pine bark, decorated in gold takamaki-e with a roundel bordered by a crane and a minogame, the ground in nashiji, the reverse wth two small roundels of plum and bamboo on roiro grounds applied with hirame or nashiji, the interior in nashiji; the third of wood with a continuous scene of a dragon in swirling clouds carved in relief, the fitted cover also of wood; the pipecase of bone otoshizutsu type carved in relief with a snail on a lotus leaf, the himotoshi formed by the space under the snail's neck
