Lot Essay

The grate is conceived in the 19th Century romantic or antiquarian fashion and its brass pillars display flowered medallions that are richly fretted in the 17th Century fashion relating to the 'Haddon Hall' pattern illustrated in Richard Bridgens, Furniture with Candelabra and Interior Decoration, 1838. Their lion paw 'claws' also relate to another 'Haddon' fire-dog pattern, but with hooves, illustrated by Bridgens.
