Lot Essay

Goodwin travelled to Egypt in 1909 by way of Italy and Greece, arriving in Port Said on the morning of 21 January. In his diary entry for 20 February, by which time he was in Cairo, he wrote: 'I think the afterglow here in Egypt is the one unique thing which we only see now and again in England. Often a quite ordinary sunset will have an astonishingly brilliant afterglow' (The Diary of Albert Goodwin, R.W.S. (1883-1927), London, 1934, p. 96).

Another version of this watercolour, measuring 7¼ x 11 in. and dated 1909, was sold in these Rooms, 26 February, 1985, lot 26.
