Baron Marie Théodore Renouard de Bussiere
Lettres sur l'Orient, écrites pendant les années 1827 et 1828. Paris: F.G. Levrault, 1829. 3 volumes (including atlas vol.), 8° and 2° (20.4 x 12.6 & 46.4 x 29.5cm.) Text: half-titles, 3 folding lithograph maps, atlas vol.: 32 lithographic plates, on india paper mounted, drawn on stone by Bichebois, Deroy, Sabatier and others, most with figures by V. Adam, all after original drawings by the author, printed by Engelmann. (Light spotting to title and blank margins of the mounts in the atlas vol.) Contemporary French green straight-grained half morocco gilt, the covers with a single fillet border with fleuron cornerpieces.
RARE. A VERY FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of Renouard de Bussière's description of a journey overland to Constantinople via Odessa, a tour through the Greek Archipelago to Egypt and a residence in Egypt. In the course of the narrative he describes and illustrates not only Constantinople but also Brussa, Lesbos, Tenedos and Egypt to which the second volume is wholly dedicated. Little is known of the author other than the fact that he 'was in the diplomatic service as 'Secrétaire d'Ambassade'. He stayed with Linant de Bellefonds in Cairo and was closely attached to the French embassy circles in both Cairo and Constantinople' (Blackmer). The crown tool on the binding is interesting: its form suggests that the present copy may have been bound for a royal or at least a noble library. Not in Abbey, or Brunet and the British Library copy lacks the atlas volume. Blackmer 1410. (3)
