A British Officer - The Chinese Regiment
An unusual watercolour depicting an officer in peaked blue forage-cap, Universal Pattern frock coat worn with double-brace Sam Browne belt over a red cummerbund, blue breeches and puttees, 12 in. x 7 in., signed V.JAMES, in a glazed frame, the back inscribed in ink The Chinese Regiment was raised at Weihai in 1898 ... This portrait is of Captain James who was Quartermaster of the Regiment - He came home with 15 men of the Regiment for the Coronation of Edward VII, and was painted by his Brother. It is noteworthy that this uniform which was devised by the Officers of the Chinese Regiment, was practically adopted the following year by the whole British Army. Captain James, who was a son of the well-known Crammer, met a wealthy American lady in Japan, whom he afterwards married.
