"The Last Barrier"
A Boer War period chromolithograph, entitled THE LAST BARRIER (Battle of Pieters Hill and Relief of Ladysmith): a panoramic view, showing Lyttleton's and Norcott's brigades in the foreground, driving Boers out of their defensive positions on Pieters Hill. In the middle distance, General Buller and his Staff observe the battle from beside the railway line, while in the distance mounted troops of Dundonald's Scouts gallop ahead to complete the relief of Ladysmith; 18in. x 28in. (45cm. x 70cm.) in a glazed wooden frame; together with a small collection of contemporary periodicals as follows: BLACK AND WHITE: 15 weekly issues dated between 11 November 1899 and 14 April 1900 (eight missing from the sequence), large format, with many illustrations of events in South Africa; THE REGIMENT, No 195 Vol VIII of 23 December 1899 : 30 pages, illustrated; the "WEEKLY BUDGET" SPECIAL: three issues, each of 16 pages, illustrated with photographs and line drawings; and the BLACK & WHITE BUDGET - TRANSVAAL SPECIAL: three issues, each of thirty-two pages, copiously illustrated with photographs etc.
