Major Charles William Dutton Pollard was born in March 1868 and gazetted to the Leinster Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant in August 1888. Advanced to Lieutenant in April 1890, he was seconded for service with the Commissariat Department and won a unique Medal for the Leinsters when he qualified for the above award for his participation in a Punitive Expedition against the village of Jacoba, between February and March 1891, under Captain F.P. Hutchinson, to avenge the attack on Mr. C.S. Murray. Pollard was advanced to Captain in the Leinsters in January 1896 but afterwards qualified as an Ordnance Officer and latterly served in the Army Ordnance Department. He was promoted to Major in January 1905 and died at Bloemfontein in February of the following year.
