Lot Essay

The prototype of circa 1627 when the artist was living in Antwerp (Scheider, op.cit., no.246) is in the Staatliche Gemäldegalerie, Copenhagen. Copies are in the Schlossmuseum, Weimar; in the Staatliche Gemäldegalerie, Schleissheim and in the Landesmuseum, Braunschweig (Scheider, op.cit., nos. 246/I, 246/2 and 246/4). As pointed out by J. Wadum, 'The Antwerp Brand on Painting on Panel', in Leids Kunsthistorisch Jaarboek, 1998, p.183, the supports made by Gabron were probably used between 1626/58. Since the prototype was painted circa 1627, it is probable that the present picture is contemporary.
