One large divided Lombard initial in red and green with brown pen-flourishing, simple Lombard initials in red (one green), red and green paragraph signs, red capital strokes and underlines. Provenance: Salzburg, Benedictine abbey of St. Peter: binding; 17th-century inscription on a1r -- Albert Ehrman, Broxbourne Library: bookplates and markings; sale, Sotheby's London, 15 November 1977, lot 204 -- sale, Christie's London, 27 November 1991, lot 34.
THE FIRST BOOK PRINTED IN HEIDELBERG. The edition is variously given to the Printers of Lindelbach (H *10112), Johann and Conrad Hist, or, more plausibly, to Heinrich Knoblochtzer. This edition is significantly earlier than the rest of the first Lindelbach group (the second definitely belongs with Knoblochtzer's output) and was printed in a state of type 2 free of Schwabacher admixture. A casting of the title type 1 was also owned by the brothers Hist, but there is no evidence that they ever moved their activities from Speier to Heidelberg. No book earlier than 1488 can be assigned with certainty to Knoblochtzer (H *2507).
FIRST EDITION of these sermons on the lives of the saints. In the later Middle Ages the collection circulated widely in manuscript and in the fifteenth century was commonly, as here, attributed to the Dominican Hugo de Prato Florido. On the evidence of the manuscript tradition, the author is now known to have been Evrardus de Valle Scholarum, a French Augustinian who died ca. 1272.
HC 9009*; BMC III, 666 (IB. 12902); BSB-Ink. E-134; GW 9489/20; Harvard/Walsh 1064; Pr 3126; Goff H-513.
