German or Swiss, struck with inventory number 281
Cartouche-shaped box with baluster sides, the sides and base engraved with c-scrolls, flowers and foliage, the cover and front side cast with foliage, scrolls and flowerheads, with remnants of blue enamelling, the cover centred with an oval hand-coloured photograph of Emperor Wilhelm II of Prussia as a young man in uniform, wearing numerous orders including the sash of the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle, within a glass-stone set border flanked by eight larger silver-mounted glass-stones

Lot Essay

Wilhelm II (1859-1941), third German Emperor and ninth King of Prussia, ruled from 1888 to 1918. A grandson of Queen Victoria, he married Princess Augusta Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein in 1881 and after her death in 1921, Princess Hermine of Reuss.
