Lot Essay

No other jade bowl of this unusual shape and design appears to have been published, although a comparable yellow jade vessel with a bowl-shaped lower body and a tiered lid in two parts is found in the Baur Collection, illustrated by Pierre-F. Schneeberger, The Baur Collection: Chinese Jades and Other Hardstones, 1976, pl. B99.

The motifs including the unusual lotus shaped finial suggests that this bowl may have been used in Buddhist rituals. A comparable white jade bowl with a double-vajra knop finial is illustrated by R. Kleiner, Chinese Jades from the Collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, no. 78.
