From the Collection of Edouard Aynard (Lyon 1837-Paris 1913), who was Officer of the Legion of Honour, Vice President of the Committee of National Museums and a member of the Academy of Fine Arts from 1901. A renowned collector of fine art in France at the turn of the century, many of his pieces are presently in the collections of numerous world-famous museums, including the Louvre, the Petit Palais in Paris, and the Metropolitan Museum of New York.

The vase remained in M. Aynard's family and was passed down from M. Aynard to the present owner.

This vase most closely compares in terms of quality and proportion to another Qianlong meiping decorated with lotus scrolls included in the Illustrated Catalogue of Ch'ing Dynasty Porcelain in the National Palace Museum, vol. II, 1981, pl. 20, and a further example painted with underglaze-blue branches bearing copper-red fruit, sold in Hong Kong, 2 November 1998, lot 301.

Cf. also the meiping with underglaze-blue scrolls and copper-red dragons enhanced with puce enamel, sold in these Rooms, 23 March 1993, Lot 773. While both vases are painted in the Ming style with underglaze colours, the present lot appears to be closer to the decorative properties of the Ming period as there was a tendency in the Qianlong period to enhance the softer underglaze copper-red with puce enamel.

Compare also with a smaller meiping with similar decoration illustrated in Chinese Ceramics, Ching Dynasty, p. 234 and another meiping with additional puce-enamel enhancing the copper-red flower, illustrated in The Collection of Chinese and Other Far Eastern Art Assembled by Yamanaka & Co., New York, 1943, no. 1058.
