Ironic comments on Einstein's unwitting last departure from Germany. Einstein describes the beauties of autumn around his country retreat at Caputh, and comments that he is to set off for California not before the beginning of December. 'The newspapers say that I am emigrating to America. But that is not true. I only head off each winter'. The letter from on board the Oakland admits ruefully 'I'm brooding well over the eternal problems of science, and filling paper with calculations as usual'; he has been reading Hans Christian Andersen - his favourite is the tale of the Chinese nightingale - and also a life of Spinoza, a work on the religious development of culture, and Ludwig Bauer. He expects to begin his journey back to Caputh in early March.

Einstein had spent the winters of 1930 to 1932 as a 'research associate' at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, an experience which played some part in his decision to give up his life in Germany. After the Nazi seizure of power, Einstein publicly declared that he would not return to Germany; he broke his ties with the Prussian Academy of Sciences on 28 March 1933. (2)
