2° (379 x 271mm). Engraved music, plates numbered 3-243. (Lacking title, some browning.) Contemporary roan-backed blue boards (spine heavily rubbed, inner hinges repaired). Provenance: 'To dear Vasilii Pavlovich Kalafati In memory from N. Rimskii-Korsakov 26 November 1900' (inscribed in Russian at head of first leaf); some marginal annotations in an unknown hand, in blue crayon or pencil; inscribed in Russian at end 'I ask [you] to correct and print' and signed A. [?]Gladnia.

Taken from a story by A.N. Ostrovskii, Snegurochka or the Snow Maiden was composed in 1880, with a prologue and four acts. A second version was produced in 1895, and both versions had their first performances in St. Petersburg. Kalafati (1869-1942) was Rimsky-Korsakoff's former pupil at the St. Peterburg Conservatory (1899), which he then joined as professor of composition teaching Stravinksii, Prokop'ev and others.
