4° (196 x 149mm). Roman type (text), italic type (shoulder notes). Printer's device on title, 5 full-page woodcuts (woodcut on X4r with initials C.B. at centre), printed music on staves. FIRST EDITION. In the Bellum musicale, described by Brunet as 'singulier et rare', Sebastiani discusses the theories of plainchant and polyphony in the form of a fable, following Ornithoparchus earlier in the century. The two 'protagonists' are depicted as kings of two provinces at war to succeed Apollo as supreme head of the realm of music. Sebastiani describes himself on the title-page as 'Metensis, organista', although he was working in Fribourg at the time of publication. He includes advice to organists for improvising variations, and he illustrates examples of keyboard tablature. Adams S-827; Brunet V, 254; VD-16 S-5192.
